The Hazardous Substance and New Organisms (HSNO) regulations in Aotearoa New Zealand provides the framework and criteria for chemical hazard classification. The Chemical Classification and Information Database (CCID) provides chemical identification information, hazard classifications and classification data for chemicals that are classified in accordance with the HSNO system. This list in Pharos corresponds to the classifications available in the CCID (as of the date specified).

Classifications are provided for the physical hazards (explosiveness, flammability, oxidising capacity, metal corrosiveness) and biological hazards (toxicity, biological corrosiveness and ecotoxicity) of a chemical. The HSNO classifications are based on toxicological studies and physical properties, as well as authoritative chemical hazard classifications such as EU R-phrases. The HSNO hazard classifications, specified in the Hazardous Substances (Classification) Regulations 2001, are represented by numbers (identifying the class and subclass of hazard), a letter (ranking the hazard) and an associated hazard phrase. For example, 3.1C Flammable liquids: Medium hazard.

The HSNO hazard classification system is similar to the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). A correlation between the two classification categories is available at https://www.epa.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/Documents/Hazardous-Substances/Guidance/correlations-between-ghs-nz-hazard-classes.pdf. We used this correlation in order to interpret the HSNO classifications through the GreenScreen List Translator.
