More about Post-Consumer Wood Fiber (OSB, Plywood, and Pallet Waste)
This Common Product considers post-consumer wood fiber from OSB, plywood, and pallet waste. Our research did not reveal to what extent these feedstocks may be used separately versus comingled. This type of post-consumer wood waste may be used in some composite wood products, such as particleboard, made in the United States. These materials may also be used in cross-laminated timber or other composite wood materials by a small number of companies. Pallets are made from sawn lumber. Primary species used are oak and southern yellow pine. Most solid wood pallets are untreated, however, many internationally traded pallets, marked by a stamp reading "MB," are treated with methyl bromide fumigant. Residual amounts of this biocide may be present in pallet waste. Substances in this record also include expected potential content of US-made OSB and plywood. These are drawn from the Common Product records for OSB and plywood as listed in Pharos at the time of this research, and additional sources. Post-consumer wood waste may contain other contaminants, some of which are represented here, most significantly, lead from paint. Other types of cellulose waste used in building products, including paper waste used in laminates and insulation, are not considered in this CP.
