Solid surface materials are comprised of acrylic resin, filler, and pigments. They have a variety of applications including sinks, showers, and countertops. This review focused on acrylic solid surface countertops and not acrylic-modified polyester or other resin solid surfaces. These countertops are cured in sheet form and can be cut or formed to a number of different shapes and layouts. Sheets can be joined with a polymer adhesive to achieve a "seamless" look. Because solid surface countertops are nonporous, they are stain-resistant and do not require sealing. A wide range of pigments may be used to create the different color options. Carbon black and titanium dioxide are the only commonly disclosed pigments. Other pigments are often undisclosed and have different associated health hazards. Certain manufacturers offer a subset of products containing recycled content that is often described as pre- or post-consumer recycled acrylic. Because these constitute a limited number of products, solid surface countertops containing recycled content are outside the scope of this review.
