More about Modified Bituminous SBS Membrane Roofing

Modified bituminous SBS membrane roofing is an asphalt based roofing system made up of a primer, base sheet, and cap sheet. This CP contains the product content related to the base and cap sheet portions of this membrane system. SBS membrane roofing is designed for use in low-slope roofing applications and can be hot-applied, cold-applied, or mechanically attached. Mostly comprised of asphalt, inclusion of the SBS copolymer provides the membrane with better adhesion characteristics, greater tensile strength, increased weathering durability in both cold and hot temperatures, and improved elasticity characteristics. Brominated flame retardants were not found to be common in modified SBS bituminous roofing but may be used in some cases. While the sources reviewed suggest that industry has moved away from the use of halogenated flame retardants, there is currently very little disclosure on the specific flame retardants used in these products. Consequently, the use of halogenated flame retardants is still possible. Products advertised as fire retardant may contain additional flame retardants beyond those captured by this CP. It is also worth noting that the mineral granules on the cap sheet, allow for improved adhesion and UV protection due to a ceramic coating that is typically applied to the granules. Additionally, a topcoat could be added to the roofing system, but this is optional and depends on installation requirements. Use of a topcoat may add additional hazards.
